My Path to Counseling

As a teen, I really struggled with anxiety and depression. At the time I wasn’t aware that I could have anxiety and depression, I just thought what I was feeling was a normal part of being a teenager. No one I knew at the time was in therapy (I didn’t even know what therapy was) or talked openly about mental health. I often suffered in silence while it quietly impacted my health and ability to form meaningful relationships with others. I headed to four-year college as a first generation college student knowing I wanted to land in a career where I could help others, and ultimately decided to pursue school counseling.

It was during graduate school that I finally went to therapy for the first time. I didn’t find a good fit in a therapist right away; in fact, I went through a handful of therapists between the start of graduate school and my first year as a practicing school counselor. Not because those therapists didn’t make me feel safe or validated, or didn’t help me develop skills, but because I just didn’t feel the right connection. Once I found the therapist that felt like the missing piece, I was able to dive deeper into my emotions and experiences than I ever had before, which helped me begin to grow into the person I knew was inside. This is why I believe that the “fit” between a client and a therapist is arguably one of the most important parts of therapy and what leads to experiencing meaningful change.

I spent eight years as a high school counselor while continuing my own work in therapy. Not only did therapy help me grow closer to the version of myself that I wanted to be in my personal life as a partner, friend, and parent, but it helped me show up for my students and their families in some of their most emotionally vulnerable moments. Over time I found myself feeling limited by the parts of school counseling that pulled me away from what I loved most: connecting with others in a real, meaningful way. The sheer scope of the job left less and less room for the relational work that drew me to this field in the first place. So I made the decision to step away from school counseling and pursue exactly that: work that allows me to form deep and meaningful relationships with clients while I walk alongside them in their own journey of self-discovery.

My Experience & Approach

My transition to a therapist in private practice has allowed me to shift from a fast-paced and directive approach in the school counseling world, to one where I get to slow down, follow the client's lead, and create space for people to access and explore their feelings and experiences more fully. At the same time, I bring an education perspective to my therapeutic practice. My experience in schools gave me a unique understanding of systems, dynamics, and the daily pressures kids, teens, parents, and adults face. In practice, this means that, no matter their age, I meet each client exactly where they are, session to session. Sometimes that looks like practical, skills-based work, and sometimes it looks like accessing and sitting with the more uncomfortable feelings together.

I approach each client without judgment and with warmth and validation for their experience, while also gently challenging them to grow when they're ready. Humor is a natural part of how I connect with people, and I bring play into my work with younger clients as well. I am passionate about providing LGBTQIA+ affirming care and about supporting BIPOC clients. I want every person who walks through my door to feel truly welcomed and safe being exactly who they are.

I also know that the world feels especially heavy and uncertain right now for a lot of people. Division in humanity, safety concerns, and constant bad news take a real and significant toll, and I want to provide space here to process that alongside everything else you're carrying.

My guiding belief is that you know yourself better than anyone else ever could, so you have all of the answers you need somewhere inside of you. My role as a therapist is to walk alongside you to guide you in accessing your emotions and the wisdom that exists within you; all while ensuring that you feel truly seen throughout the process. It is also my belief that everyone has a profound need to feel known for who they are, and only when people feel validated in their experience, are they able to understand and begin to regulate their own emotions and experience. My hope from our work together is that you walk away with a deeper sense of self-awareness that empowers you within yourself and in your relationships with others.

My Life Outside the Counseling Room

When I’m away from the office, you can often find me out in nature. I love hiking, camping, backpacking, and getting out on the water on my paddle board! I really cherish my “me time” (especially since becoming a mom) so I find solace and rejuvenation in the outdoors. Of course I also love to spend time with my family and friends. My partner, our toddler, and our pup Penny often explore outdoors, travel, and go to concerts together! Nurturing those bonds, nurtures my soul.
